How I learned to stop worrying...and love SQL Server

As a data professional, managing databases is a crucial part of day-to-day work. And when it comes to managing databases, Microsoft SQL Server has always been a reliable and trusted solution. But over the years, I’ve come to appreciate more than just its reliability. I’ve come to love how easy it is to update and maintain, especially with Software Assurance (SA).

First, let's talk about why updating SQL Server is important. Like any software, SQL Server needs to be updated to fix bugs and security issues, and to add new features and improvements. Failing to update your SQL Server can lead to serious consequences, such as data breaches, data corruption, or even system crashes. Keeping your SQL Server on an in supported version is also key to maintaining accreditation such as Cyber Essentials /Cyber Essentials + etc.

Fortunately, updating SQL Server is easy. Microsoft releases regular updates, which can be downloaded and installed with just a few clicks. You can choose to install updates manually or automatically, depending on your preferences. Either way, updating SQL Server is quick and painless. Each Cumulative Update (CU) is certified to the same level as a Service Pack so you should have confidence everything will still work post update.

The release pattern changed from SQL 2017 fromService Packs to Monthly Cumulative Updates for the first 12 months of release, followed by one approximately every quarter for the next few years until for the last year in support one per six months is released.

But that’s not the only reason I love SQL Server.It’s also because of Software Assurance (SA). This means you don’t have to worry about purchasing new licenses every time a new version of SQL Server is released. So, ask yourself a few questions:

1.          Are you running any SQL Servers that are out of mainstream support?

2.          Are you patching SQL Express instillations that come bundled with products such as Veeam B&R and Net2?

3.          Is my SQL Server estate vulnerable?

Be aware of the lifecycle of SQL Servers, the dates below are only valid if the latest CU/SP has been patched to the server. Please also note that only two versions of SQL Server are currently in Mainstream support:

Please note that Extended Support only includes security updates, and it is recommended that any SQL Server in Extended Support be upgraded to one in Mainstream support.
